I thought that I had posted this when it happened, but I guess I left it in the draft file. This happened in June, but for some reason I am still learning from this experience…
Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: Hebrews 12:14
In the last few days, I have had the opportunity to try to live out that verse. Last Saturday, my family received a call that my grandfather was in the hospital in Arizona.
It was a good trip, but being in the car for 20hrs and not knowing what was going to happen once we got there added some tension to the situation. I wish I could say that I was the perfect example of this verse, but that would be a lie. I did however learn the message behind this verse….
We are called to peacemakers in this not peaceful world. We are also called to be holy(separate), not doing the evil that the rest of the world is doing. However, looking at the verse, I realized that some people see this as an impossible task. How can we be peaceable, yet not agreeing to be or do what everyone else is doing??
The answer is found by looking at this verse at a different angle…..
The verse says pursue peace and holiness. So, if you have too much peace, you will be willing to go with the crowd just for the sake of “peace”. If you go to far to the right, and have a “holier then thou” mentality, you will drive everyone away from you. I believe that the healthy balance of both is the only way you can live.
When a person is in the right relationship with the Lord, they will have both peace and holiness. This may seem like an impossible task, but with God’s help…anything is possible.
